Xwanas Wrya, an actor from the Kurdistan region of Iraq has been shot dead in broad daylight allegedly because of his atheism, on June 22. After the killing, the murderer wrote on Facebook, ”I’ll not allow anyone vilify my prophet. I’ll not”
Known as the “king of the street” in Chamchamal, Wrya was a talented actor, poet, sports enthusiast, and devoted father. His unwavering stance against injustices and cruelty made him a target.
Binar Mustafa, an Iraqi activist, lamented, ”Wrya’s untimely death raises concerns about the increasing support for Islamist groups by Kurdistan’s rulers, leading to a rise in radical ideologies. Iraqi Kurdistan now holds the highest number of mosques per capita in the country, reflecting the growing influence of religious conservatism. As the community mourns the loss of a vibrant young talent, there is a pressing need to address the alarming climate of intolerance and violence that has engulfed the region.
Xwanas Wrya’s legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of defending the freedom of belief and expression while fostering a society that embraces diversity and protects human rights. His tragic story calls for a renewed commitment to creating a more inclusive and tolerant Iraqi Kurdistan, where individuals can live and express themselves freely, without fear of persecution.”’
Numerous incidents worldwide have highlighted the harrowing reality of atheists facing persecution and violence. Bangladesh, for example, has seen a rise in brutal attacks on secular bloggers and freethinkers, with several prominent individuals being hacked to death by extremists. Similarly, in countries like Saudi Arabia, where religious conservatism is deeply ingrained, expressing atheistic views can result in severe punishment, including imprisonment or even execution. Other countries such as Pakistan, Iran, and Nigeria have also witnessed cases of violence against atheists, often fueled by religious intolerance and extremism.
The tragic reality of Xwanas Wrya being killed for his atheistic beliefs demands immediate attention and action. True progress lies in cultivating societies that celebrate diversity and uphold the right to freedom of thought, ensuring that no one is persecuted or deprived of life simply because of their atheism.
