The first two verses in Genesis are problematic to translate on their own. But translations are dependent on the context.
The first verses of Genesis 1 are usually translated like this: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep.”
My more accurate translation: “In the beginning when the gods made the skies and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep.”
There is no creation ex nihilo in Genesis 1 since the earth already existed. So it’s a making not a creation. And the word heavens makes it sound like heaven. It’s the skies. Nor is it God with a capital G. It’s gods.
